How ScreenPoint Medical’s Transpara software is changing the face of breast cancer detection using LifeVoxel

Life-changing technology delivering life-saving benefits

Partnering with LifeVoxel, ScreenPoint Medical is transforming early breast cancer detection and diagnosis.

Enabling industry-leading Transpara mammography software to be accessible over a standard internet connection, LifeVoxel gives physicians access to life-saving AI technology that integrates with existing legacy RIS/PACS systems. With early detection and treatment key to long-term breast cancer survival, this partnership has the potential to drive improved outcomes as well as lead the way in AI medical imaging.

About ScreenPoint Medical & Transpara

Healthcare technology company, ScreenPoint Medical, was founded in 2014 by Professor Nico Karssemeijer and Professor Sir Michael Brady. Wanting to address breast cancer survival rates, they realized there were fewer radiologists specializing in reading mammograms at a time of increasing breast cancer incidence.

Harnessing Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), ScreenPoint Medical created Transpara - an advanced mammography solution that blends classic physics with AI to support diagnostic decision-making. Going beyond current CAD systems, Transpara produces faster and more accurate results, reducing pressure on radiologists.

  • 28% more accurate than previous iterations of Transpara

  • 35% of exams with interval cancers found earlier

  • 70% of exams can confidently be labeled as normal

Transpara not only assists with early detection of breast cancer - but it also categorizes scans based on identified risk factors. Using a 10-point scale, Transpara provides a crucial second set of eyes for radiologists, reducing their workload by up to 70%.

Early detection is key

Early detection and treatment is key to long-term survival for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly, growing radiology caseloads, inefficient workflows and old legacy systems can delay diagnosis and treatment, often resulting in poor outcomes for patients.

2.3 million

people globally are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, the majority being women *

50% to 80%

of breast cancers are not detected early in low and middle income countries *

1 in 4

or 25% of all cancers diagnosed in women globally are breast cancer *

The struggle: Getting radiologists and physicians access to AI

While ScreenPoint’s Transpara software has the potential to be a game changer for the healthcare industry, getting it into the hands of radiologists and specialists posed an unexpected challenge.

Integrating Transpara into the existing workflows of physicians proved difficult. Already busy and time-poor, a potentially long development lead time (years with other PACS vendors) combined with the complexity of integrating with legacy systems tempered initial interest in Transpara.

The healthcare industry was also largely resistant to cloud-based diagnostic solutions. Previous iterations were plagued with poor connectivity, slow uploads and low resolution, resulting in radiologists and physicians dismissing cloud-based systems.

ScreenPoint Medical needed to address these concerns and prove that Transpara offered the speed, accuracy, convenience and access to support early breast cancer detection.

"Can I have a worklist in a triage sense? Sure. Can you display CAD markings in the images? Sure. Can you jump to slice? Sure."

"Well, you’ve just described the three main points of our product, and you were able to say yes to all of them."

Enter LifeVoxel’s powerful patented intelligent cloud solution

LifeVoxel’s revolutionary cloud-based PACS platform offered a way forward for ScreenPoint Medical. Fully accessible on any device, with diagnostic-grade images, end-to-end workflow management and an online app market, LifeVoxel ticked all the boxes.

Following an initial meeting, ScreenPoint Medical was satisfied that LiveVoxel could meet their needs, including:

  • worklist integration (including triage information)

  • display all study CAD markings (in both FFDM & DBT images)

  • Jump-to-Slice DBT features

  • Transpara summary report.

ScreenPoint Medical was soon set up as a vendor on the LifeVoxel marketplace. Transpara data was uploaded to the LifeVoxel server and engineering teams on both sides collaborated on integrating live updates of scan data and performing testing.

LifeVoxel met every ScreenPoint Medical request along the way. The result? A live demo product of Transpara was available on the LifeVoxel marketplace within 4 weeks of the project commencing - just in time for the RSNA conference attended by 60,000 healthcare professionals - well short of the over 12 month timeline provided by other PACS vendors.

“Unbelievable”: How Transpara is transforming breast cancer imaging using LifeVoxel

At the November 2022 Annual Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting, ScreenPoint Medical showcased Transpara on the new LifeVoxel platform. Delegates were surprised at the software’s ability to render high-resolution images via the cloud, with one IT specialist declaring “we didn’t know this tech existed in the market.”

ScreenPoint Medical also shared two studies highlighting the potential for Transpara to safely reduce workload in the clinical workflow of a double-reading breast cancer screening program, demonstrating Transpara’s ability to match the clinical performance of breast cancer radiologists.

Thanks to LifeVoxel, ScreenPoint Medical got their life-changing technology in front of more radiologists and specialists. Using a 5mbps connection, Transpara rendered multi-gigabyte studies in seconds, illustrating the potential for full integration into legacy RIS/PACS systems.

Harnessing the full power of AI and cloud-based technology

The collaboration between ScreenPoint Medical and LifeVoxel leads the way in harnessing the full power of AI and the cloud in the medical and healthcare industries.

This partnership proves that AI technology can be integrated with legacy systems to reduce costs, shorten lead times and minimize inconvenience for physicians. It also illustrates that cloud-based technology doesn’t have to be tied to poor upload/download speeds.

Ultimately, LifeVoxel offers a ‘real’ cloud PACS solution, allowing Transpara to:

  • Display solely from a web browser

  • Undertake server-side rendering

  • Render images fast (even on very slow wifi)

  • Provide full capability to triage, jump slice and access to CAD markings.

With the initial barriers to adoption now cleared, ScreenPoint Medical can continue its mission to improve breast cancer survival rates via Transpara’s industry-leading early detection capabilities.
